Shanghai Theatre Academy CAMPUS

Shanghai, China

client: Shanghai Theatre Academy  role: Competition                      status: Joint First Place

The invited competition required that the campus which offers education in the art of dance, music and theatre and the buildings currently on the site were to be assimilated within a new masterplan which would significantly supplement the existing facilities. The design concept driven by the historic context and informed by the client brief and current physical and climatic environmental context. Historically an agrarian culture inhabited the lands now occupied by the academy and were once known as ‘the land of rice and water’.

New buildings were to be raised on columns allowing for the free flow of students and staff; courtyard spaces were to be multifunctional allowing for impromptu performances and socialising, encouraging interaction and transparency while lightly touching the once agricultural lands.

The new accommodation provides for lecture and teaching facilities; performance/rehearsal rooms; administrative and library facilities; student residences and signature theatre and theatre museum buildings.
